On June 12, Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business hosted its first Careers in Professional Accounting (CPA) Camp, a one-day all-expenses-paid program designed to immerse underrepresented high school students including, but not limited to those who identify as: having a disability, LGBTQ+, students of color and the first in their family to attend college to the accounting profession.

Programming began at 9:45 a.m. and ran until 4 p.m., featuring preliminary accounting speakers Julie DeStefanis from Deloitte and Dr. Cynthia Turner from the Project Strive Program at Ohio State.

“What I liked about what [Dr. Turner] talked about was the difference between finance and accounting,” Line C., a rising freshman at Ohio State, said. “I wasn't really sure about what the difference was. I just knew that finance made money, and accounting was just something that I just never really thought about. It just had to deal with numbers and stuff. And I feel like her presentation was something that opened me more up to the idea of doing accounting.”

Students also heard a panel of professionals from firms KPMG, GBQ, CSH, BDO and Deloitte and toured campus at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business.

“When I came here it made me really interested in the fact that they're always advising people and you're collaborating with a lot of different clients,” camp attendee Vinisha said. “That's something that really got me interested into this career.”

The day closed out with an interactive session on professionalism by Dr. Tiffany Crosby, CPA, chief learning officer at the Ohio Society of CPAs, and a scholarship presentation.

CPA Camps were also held at the University of Toledo, Cincinnati State University, Kent State University and Wright State University.
