The IRS has released a Tax Tip for Tax Pros document encouraging Ohio tax practitioners to remain vigilant as the April 15 filing deadline approaches.
The IRS said there were more data breach incidents reported in 2024 by Ohio tax pros than in some of the larger states, including three new breaches in recent weeks, calling the situation “very concerning.”
The agency also noted that in 2024, the reported incidents were primarily reported around the April 15 filing deadline.
The IRS is encouraging practitioners to keep their systems safe, educate staff on preventing data breaches and closely monitor the number of returns filed under their EFINs and PTINs.
Any data breaches should be reported immediately to Ohio Stakeholder Liaison Nichelle Gray, 216.415.3512, who will ensure all the appropriate IRS offices are alerted. If reported quickly, IRS can take steps to block fraudulent returns in the clients' names and will assist tax pros through the process. Speed is critical.
