Scott Steineman, CPA, decided busy season just wasn’t busy enough for him. Four years ago, he added more to his to-do list, becoming a co-president of the Jumba Hoops 3-on-3 Easter Classic tournament.

BurnettsThe event was started by two Minister high school students 14 years ago, and four years ago – when Steineman, manager at McCrate, DeLaet, & Company, found out the future of the annual tournament was in doubt – he decided to step up. He has been heavily involved ever since and said he doesn’t find it difficult to balance the coordination of the event with his job and family time.

“I don't think it's hard at all, because it's something fun to look forward to – spend time with my family and friends to help plan it,” Steineman said. “So, it's something we're doing together. It's something to look forward to outside of work.”

This year the Jumba Hoops 3-on 3-Easter Classic will take place April 20 at Minister High School. All proceeds will go to St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer, which supports cancer research, treatment and assistance organizations, as well as other local assistance organizations.

The day of the tournament has fun activities for the whole family. If you’re not playing in the tournament or cheering in the stands, you can:

  • Create a team (of 3-4 people) and play in the tournament for $60/team.
  • Donate a door prize or raffle prize.
  • Help make dinners.
  • Work concessions.
  • Keep score of the games.
  • Help with registration.

The tournament offers stiff competition in a friendly atmosphere, he said. There are two brackets in which to compete, so players have their choice of a more competitive or relaxed style of play.

Admission to the tournament is free (though donations are encouraged), and tickets for the raffle and door prizes are $1 each. Steineman said the goal this year is to have more than 30 teams of 3-4 players participate and to raise more than $6,000 total to be donated to St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer.

“We donated $4,700 last year,” he said, “We're a small part of the bigger picture. [St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer] gave $133,0000 to The James this year, so that'd be cool to be a small part of that.”
