Expect slim majorities and government funding to impact politics this year, said one expert from AICPA.
Rachel Dresen, senior director of congressional and political affairs at AICPA & CIMA, joined OSCPA CEO & President Laura Hay, CPA, CAE, at the Jan. 16 Town Hall to discuss what to watch for in the coming months.
"We have slim majorities this year, especially in the house,” Dresen said. “We thought it was slim in the 118th Congress, and somehow it even got slimmer for the 119th Congress.”
Dresen said the slim margins could make it harder for legislation to pass, as even one or two votes of opposition could kill a bill.
She noted that all four CPAs up for re-election in the House won.
Government funding and budget reconciliation will be especially popular in the beginning of this year, Dresen said, as government funding ends March 14. She noted there could be a possibility of a government shutdown after this if Congress cannot come to an agreement.
“Republicans want to do some big things around budget reconciliation, tax reform, as well as border security and energy reforms,” Dresen said. “And then the other big legislation that they have ahead of them is the debt limit.”
