Your Ohio Society of CPAs Government Relations team keeps our fingers on the pulse of issues impacting you in Columbus and Washington, D.C.
Ohio budget bill: The Ohio House will be in session on Monday, July 21, for the purpose of considering overriding Gov. DeWine’s vetoes on three property tax reforms originally included in Substitute House Bill 96. In case you missed it, OSCPA managed to escape being included among his 67 vetoes, and all of our priorities were enacted. Click here to learn more.
Any members who would like to email their views to Ohio legislators or Gov. DeWine on these issues can go to our “Take Action” page and use the “compose your own message.”
Federal reconciliation bill: As a result of advocacy efforts, the final version of the federal reconciliation bill, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), that President Trump signed into law on July 4 retains the ability of all pass-through entities (PTEs) to continue deducting state and local taxes (SALT) at the entity level. The IRS on July 14 also released this fact sheet providing guidance on tips, overtime, car loan interest and the senior deduction. Finally, the Ohio Society of CPAs is hosting a live webcast on Wednesday, July 30 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on The One, Big, Beautiful Bill – Impacts, Implementation, and Tax Planning Opportunities. The webcast qualifies for one hour of CPE and you can register here.
Disaster Relief Act: One of the issues, H.R. 517 (119), that the Ohio Society of CPAs supported during our May Capitol Hill visits in Washington, D.C., cleared the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent on July 10. The legislation offers quicker relief from tax filing deadlines for those affected by natural disasters, such as the tornadoes that hit Ohio in March 2024.
In short, the measure empowers the IRS to offer filing relief to taxpayers in areas where a state has declared an emergency. Until now, the agency could delay filing deadlines only for disasters declared by the federal government through FEMA, which took longer and often occurred after tax filing deadlines had already passed. Ohio TechCred: During the May application round of TechCred, more than $9.9 million in funding was awarded, representing the highest total amount from any round of the program since it was launched in September 2019. A total of 622 employers were awarded, providing the opportunity for Ohioans to earn 8,362 tech-focused credentials.
Ohio employers are encouraged to take advantage of the July TechCred application period until it closes on July 31 at 3:00 p.m. The Ohio Society of CPAs has partnered with MAX Technical Training to offer classes to our members that qualify for CPE, learn more here.
