Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday set for the first two weeks of August

Written on Jul 11, 2025

Ohio’s 2025 Sales Tax Holiday is almost here. Scheduled to run  from Friday, Aug. 1 through Thursday, Aug. 14, the holiday sales tax exemption will apply to items priced at $500 or less, purchased in-person or online, with some exceptions including purchases of services, watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products or any item that contains marijuana.

This is the first time the tax holiday will run for two full weeks. Ohio’s initial sales tax holiday ran for three days and was limited to school supplies. Then the law was changed, allowing it to run for up to two weeks, depending on the state’s anticipated revenue. In 2024, it only ran for 10 days because of the uncertainty about what it would cost the state in foregone revenue, partly due to the expanded range of items eligible for the exemption.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) factsheet on the sales tax holiday, along with frequently asked questions, the sales tax exemption can apply to electronics such as computers or TVs, clothing, books, home goods including furniture or kitchenware, sporting goods and dine-in food.

However, it is limited to items costing $500 or less. If, for example, a computer costs $600, the entire amount is subject to the sales tax. In addition, ODT points out that items normally sold as a unit must be sold that way during the sales tax holiday. They cannot be priced separately and sold as individual items to qualify for the exemption.
