The Ohio Society of CPAs government relations (GR) team has already hosted three guest speakers during the live portion of the Advance sessions, with one more still on tap for May 14 (register here).
On both May 3 and May 10, Rep. Bill Roemer, CPA joined Advance to discuss several issues. He currently serves as the Chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, and he first talked about his priorities for the remainder of this legislative session.
Rep. Roemer also mentioned the hearings he has been holding as co-chair of the Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform, and how CPAs around Ohio can engage to help shape Ohio laws and regulations. Finally, he discussed legislation he recently introduced, House Bill 484, that establishes childcare grant programs. He just gave sponsor testimony on this legislation at its first hearing in the House Finance Committee on May 8.
During the Advance session on May 8, Matthew Dodovich from the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) joined the GR team. He currently serves as the Tax Program Executive over Income, Pass-Through Entity, and Employer Withholding Taxes.
Matt covered hot topics from the recently concluded tax filing season, discussed the newly redesigned SD 100 allowing multiple school districts on a single form, and addressed FAQs on the recent CAT changes and how to cancel accounts. He also spoke on the topic of refund offset letters, and then concluded by recommending members should register for the upcoming Ohio Virtual Tax Academy (OVTA) on May 15 to learn about these subjects in more detail.
The last Advance session will be held on May 14 from 1-4pm, and members can still register here and earn three free credit hours of learning that qualifies for CPE. The final guest speaker will be Amy Arrighi, Executive Director of the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA).
Amy plans to discuss the following municipal income tax issues: NOL carryforwards, the Ohio Supreme Court case on 2020 refunds, remote/hybrid worker withholding, automatic filing extensions, the net profits tax safe harbor (H.B. 121), and late filing penalties being abated and reduced (H.B. 105) – both of these bills were amended into H.B. 33 and enacted.
You can watch the interviews with both Rep. Roemer and Matt Dodovich (ODT) on the OSCPA YouTube channel.
