As of Sept. 29, CPAs are included in the list of mandatory reporters of elder abuse under Ohio Revised Code Section 5101.63.
CPAs interacting with clients, especially those who are seniors, need to understand what’s required of them, writes Erin C. Eurenius, CPA, Esq., in the November/December issue of CPA Voice.
“A mandatory reporter in the state of Ohio is required to immediately report to a county department of job and family services if they have ‘reasonable cause to believe an adult is being abused, neglected, or exploited, or is in a condition which is the result of abuse, neglect or exploitation,’” Eurenius says. “What is important to note is professionals do not need to have evidence of the abuse.”
