This week’s CPA of Ohio is Ann Nguyen, a senior accounting and quantitative economics major at Case Western Reserve University.
How was the transition of moving from Vietnam to the United States for you?
There are a lot of culture differences between Vietnam and the US. I am absolutely grateful and thankful for my experience in the US because I feel like the difference in culture, like there is more freedom in the US, helped me to figure out who I am, and what I'm actually interested in. I'm able to make more choices for myself and choose the career path that I want. And I love that the education opportunities in the US are very diverse and are very customized for you. For example, you can be an accounting major and a dance major at the same time, and you can use either major whenever and however you want. To be able to make the decision, I think is an amazing opportunity.
What’s an outlet that has helped you through your classes?
I think it's mostly my classmates and professors. My classmates in most of my accounting classes are very supportive. It's a really friendly environment where we support each other with assignments, we study together, work on group projects together, and because we're all going through the same thing, we are able to support each other. So, it's really helped me to get through the toughest times of the semester. If I ever have any issue where I need help, I can always go talk to my classmates and professors and receive their advice. I think that's what really helped me to get through all the tough assignments and stressful times.
Do you like to travel and where would you like to travel to?
Oh, I absolutely love traveling. So, ever since I came to the United States for university, I’ve traveled to different states. I've been to California, Portland, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and New York. In Asia, I've been to Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and Taiwan. I have also been to Australia and Canada. I absolutely love traveling, flying, and trying different things like restaurants. And one of my bucket list items is to be able to go to Europe.
