On May 15, OSCPA’s delegation to AICPA Council joined President and CEO, Laura Hay, CPA, CAE, and Vice President of Government Relations Greg Saul, Esq., CAE, to advocate for the profession in Washington D.C. during meetings with Ohio’s Congressional delegation.

OSCPA leaders Courtney Clark, CPA, Jessie Wright, Ph.D., CPA, Amy Vetter, CPA, Darci Congrove, CPA, and Michael Bowman, CPA, with student representative Austin Vetter, shared how pending legislation would impact businesses, candidates and licensees.

The AICPA hosted state CPA Societies from across the country on Capitol Hill to advocate for issues impacting accounting focused professions. The OSCPA joined the three-day event, meeting with several Ohio Congressional members.

OSCPA had meetings with the offices of nine members of U.S. Congress and our two members of the U.S. Senate. The meetings focused on a variety of issues, including:

  • STEM legislation that would allow existing K-12 STEM grant funding to be used for accounting education.

  • Retaining the current ability for pass-through entities to fully deduct the entity’s state and local income taxes on the business at the federal level. Be on the lookout for an upcoming member call to “take action” regarding proposed federal legislation threatening the Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET).

  • Tax policies that would help analyze proposals and make changes to tax rules.

  • Support of the Freedom to Invest In Tomorrow’s Workforce Act, which will expand the use of 529 savings plans to cover postsecondary credentials.

Although legislative action is always challenging at the federal level, lawmakers appeared positive that many of the changes discussed could get traction in the coming months.
