Seeking members to volunteer for tax assistance program

Written on Jan 31, 2025

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), the IRS-backed program that helps qualifying taxpayers file returns to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), are both turning 50 years old this year.

Beginning in 1975, the VITA has been offering free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns and seeking to claim its companion program, the EITC.

VITA programs around the country depend upon dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers to staff IRS partner sites. They provide a collegial opportunity for retired or semi-retired CPAs to use the valuable skills they have spent a lifetime developing to make a difference in their community.

Although all volunteers must be IRS certified, there is a streamlined certification method available to CPAs with an active license and in good standing. Under Circular 230, Regulations Governing Practice before the Internal Revenue Service, CPAs may take a short Federal Tax Law Update Test demonstrating proficiency in current tax law rather than the longer certification exams required of non-credentialed volunteers.

Volunteers are also required to pass two short tests ensuring consistency of process (Intake/Interview and Quality Review) and awareness of ethical practices (Volunteer Standards of Conduct).

If you have the requisite skill set and are looking for a way to put it to use serving your less fortunate neighbors, please call 800-906-9887 or use the VITA Locator Tool to find the nearest VITA site.
