PODCAST: Lessons learned from 2020 that businesses can take into 2021

2020 has been a historic year, and it’s crucial to now take the hard-earned knowledge you’ve gained into 2021, said OSCPA President and CEO Scott Wiley, CAE.

“I like to tell people the accounting profession isn't focused on bringing businesses and people back,” he said. “It's focused on bringing them forward.” 

Wiley joined the latest episode of The State of Business podcast to reflect on how businesses were impacted by the events of 2020, the outlook on 2021 and to discuss the Coalition to Stop the Spread. 

“CPAs in particular, have been so impactful in helping individuals, clients, companies, businesses, organizations, nonprofits, and even the government find that way forward,” Wiley said. “Whether that's been serving as their most trusted business adviser, helping them make decisions as to how to restructure their business, how to get funding, and what to do keep their doors open and people employed.” 

OSCPA, like all businesses, had to keep up with the impact of coronavirus and work to meet changing member needs. Over the course of the year, OSCPA offered members an online coronavirus resource center, a back-to-work guide for employers, live “town hall” sessions with insight from top experts, efforts from the government relations team at the Statehouse to keep businesses interests in mind and much more. 

And while hopes are high of returning to “normal” now that the coronavirus vaccine is being administered, Wiley said people should not lose focus on the current reality. 

“We're not out of the woods yet,” he said. “We still have important work to do to keep our physical, mental and emotional health and well-being at the forefront.” 

To address that, OSCPA has partnered with several businesses and organizations across the state as part of the Coalition to Stop the Spread, which recognizes the threat COVID-19 presents to our health and economy. 

Over the holidays and throughout the winter, it’s crucial to follow the guidelines that have been scientifically proven to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. This means washing hands regularly, wearing a mask when out in public and maintaining physical distance when around others not in your immediate household. 

“Doing this important – albeit difficult – work as it relates to the choices we're making right now will save jobs and save lives in our state,” Wiley said. 

These efforts over the following months will be tied to the future of businesses across the state, and Wiley said so far, he’s been inspired by the work already done by the accounting profession and business community.

“It's been an awesome sight to behold,” he said. “This profession dug in, did the work and continues to do the work, to help their clients to help their businesses, help their companies help each other find their way forward.”
