PODCAST: Moving the needle on D+I

Diversity and inclusion have certainly come a long way, but it’s nowhere close to the level it should be at in the 21st century, says Margaret Finley, Diversity and Inclusion Strategist and Consultant at OSCPA.

Finley, who began working at OSCPA in November of 2019 is responsible for leading and executing D+I strategies. Since starting she’s been learning the current D+I strategic plan, and as 2020 is the end of the plan’s length will be tasked with creating a new plan for the next three years.

Recently, Finley joined an episode of The State of Business podcast, where she discusses what it means to see results from D+I, how it has evolved and OSCPA’s inaugural D+I Crossing Bridges Summit.

“When I think about diversity and inclusion, I think one of the things we all have in common as human beings is we want to have a sense of belonging,” said Finley.

One of the most important aspects of D+I is making sure everyone feels included by being open to meaningful conversations, she said. People often feel they will be judged if they’re unfamiliar with each other’s backgrounds, but this can be overcome by taking time to learn about the experiences of others.

“At the end of the day, it takes meaningful conversation just to get to know another person’s experience,” she said.

Finley also discusses OSCPA’s upcoming Crossing Bridges Summit, which will be held on Aug. 13. The event will be a full day of conversation, Finley said. There will be six breakout sessions where attendees can go to various sessions to discuss best practices, what’s working and what’s not working, and how to move forward.

“One of the things I really look forward to is working with our members around D+I,” she said.

Finley also says she is most excited to see what will come from the summit and determining how to “build this action plan to evolve our journey.”
