WileySI want to share with you the following letter, which I submitted today to the Columbus Dispatch.

I was thrilled to read Mark Ferenchik’s story in Sunday’s Dispatch about the ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition coming to Columbus this week. (The ‘Super Bowl of Meetings’ is coming. What’s that mean for Columbus?, Aug. 4)

I had the privilege serving as chair of the ASAE board of directors when we selected Columbus, along with Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas and Atlanta to host this event. The work to attract and prepare for the ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition, which has been happening for years, is a great example of what has become known as “The Columbus Way” – a partnering of public and private interests to make our city a growing and welcoming destination. The efforts have taken root, and from this event will grow to significantly benefit Ohio’s economy; over three-plus days more than 5,000 attendees will yield $16 million in direct economic impact on Columbus. Over the next 10 years that is expected to total $500 million in business that attendees will bring with their meetings, conventions and conferences.

That’s good news for Ohio, and it matches well with my “day job” as president and CEO of The Ohio Society of CPAs, an organization committed to building a strong business environment in our state.

This event is special for The Ohio Society for another reason: Barbara Benton CAE, our longtime vice president of government relations, is being honored as 45th recipient of ASAE’s Professional Performance Award. For more than 30 years, Barb has been a leader of our government relations efforts, encouraging legislation that fosters a healthy business environment in Ohio while promoting and protecting the key role CPAs play as trusted business advisers. She is well known in the Ohio Statehouse for her professionalism and the great work she has done for the accounting and association worlds. Our organization and state are better for having her.

On behalf of the Ohio Society of CPAs, I’d like to welcome ASAE members to our great state and to the city of Columbus!
