In a small eastern European town in Bulgaria called Sandanski, Sofia Sova grew up hiking the mountains, skiing and exploring the outdoors with her family.

Sova, who is now a senior assurance associate at Marcum in Cleveland, began her journey toward her CPA at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria. From there she took part in a work travel program which gave her the opportunity to spend her summers here.

Eventually, she decided to make a permanent move to Cleveland and finished her degree at Cleveland State University in December 2018.

“I love Cleveland,” she said. “I love the area; I find it to be a very unique city with its own character and it’s close to the lakes.”

Sova describes her experiences at each university to be very different, yet beneficial in their own ways. For example, she said the programs at the University of National and World Economy were more specialized, and students learn more about economics, economics history and logistics. While in the U.S., universities put more of an emphasis on critical thinking, she said.

“I had great experiences at both universities,” Sova said. “They were very different, so I tried to get the best from both.”

Before graduating, Sova held an internship with Marcum – which at the time was Skoda Minotti – and she was offered a full-time position starting in January 2019.

Since then, Sova has been working to earn her CPA, and by mid-August learned she passed the exam.

“I’ve worked really hard to pass all the exam (sections) and I feel like being new to this country and having English as my second language was a little harder for me,” she said. “I’m really proud I passed it. I’m really happy and excited.”

All in all, Sova said what she’s most looking forward to about being a CPA is continuing to grow, learn and develop her career.

“I have amazing mentors here. The people that I work with here at Marcum are a great example of mentors and managers and people that I want to be,” she said. “I want to help my clients and help them to grow and do my best.”
