CPA Voice: The in-demand skill for great leaders

Written on Apr 27, 2023

Strong leaders display a plethora of common, easily identifiable traits, but there are some shared traits that are harder to identify.

“Much evidence has been collected that supports a direct correlation between emotional intelligence and career satisfaction, job performance, relationship success, and mental health,” writes Elizabeth A. Wilson, CPA in the March/April issue of CPA Voice. “Leaders who possess high levels of emotional intelligence are likely to be more effective communicators and problem solvers because they have a deeper understanding of themselves, their team, and how words and actions impact success.”

Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management are all characteristics of emotional intelligence. Practicing and developing these characteristics can be extremely beneficial for both personal and professional development.

“Emotional intelligence is at the forefront of in-demand skills for effective leaders,” writes Wilson. “If you are looking to achieve this level and succeed you should take the time to work on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship building to increase your emotional quotient. It is a currency you can’t afford to be without.”
