CPA Voice: The future of accounting and finance

Written on Feb 9, 2023

Integration and elevation are starting to emerge as key themes in the future of accounting and finance. What was once viewed as two very distinct departments with different skill sets, are now going to begin to work in alignment.

“In the world of accounting and finance, strategists and technicians were often separated by roles and team structures,” writes Tiffany Crosby, CPA, CGMA, MBA, OSCPA chief learning officer, in the January/February issue of CPA Voice. “However, the rapid pace of business no longer affords such distinctions. The future of accounting and finance is one in which individuals possess strategic and technical skills.”

As structures and systems evolve, so does the talent need. Crosby details how finding and retaining talent is a top trend within accounting and finance and what skill sets companies are beginning to seek.

“Accounting personnel will need to navigate more traditional finance topics. Finance personnel will need general accounting knowledge. And the professional accountant will need it all: strategy, tactics, accounting and finance,” she writes. “The previous boundaries have fallen away.”
