Written on Apr 6, 2022

Hiring by small businesses inched forward in March according to the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index.

The index rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in March, reversing hiring declines recorded in the first two months of 2022. CBIZ said the index tracks payroll and hiring trends for more than 3,700 companies nationwide that each have 300 or fewer employees.

CBIZ reports that hiring gains were strongest in the Northeast, where the index rose by 0.71%. It was essentially flat or down in the Central (+0.08%), Southeast (+0.03%) and West (-0.82%) regions.

Sectors with the most notable hiring increases were arts and entertainment, accommodations and food services, and construction, CBIZ reported. Technology/life sciences and wholesale distribution experienced the most significant hiring declines.

CBIZ said 25% of companies in the index increased staffing, 57% made no change to their headcounts and 18% reduced employment totals.
