Mindfulness is key to resisting tax season burnout

Prioritizing mental health and staying active are just two ways to prevent burnout this tax season, one CPA said.  

“There are different ways you can stay active,” said A’Shira Nelson, CPA, tax manager at Apple Growth Partners and member of the OSCPA Board of Directors. “But being active is so important.  It's one thing I cannot move forward without especially as we go into this next busy season.”  

Nelson’s advice for this tax season is for CPAs to be mindful and practice a positive mindset, remembering what they are able to control rather than focusing on uncertainty. She joined us recently on The State of Business podcast last month to express the importance of prioritizing mental health and making time for the important people in our lives. 

For both virtual and in-person professionals, Nelson said establishing a daily plan to balance work and home life can be enormously helpful.  

“Take it one day at a time. One to-do list at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself. Yes, we know there’s a lot that has to be done,” she said. “But don't overwhelm yourself with everything that has to be done by the deadline. Take it one day at a time and check one item off at a time.” 

Time for exercise, spending time with a friend, or simply getting away from the computer can all be beneficial in reenergizing your mood. She said looking forward to these activities can also help maintain energy. 

With Nelson’s advice, dealing with this year’s tax season as a marathon rather than a full-on sprint is what will assure you in passing that finish line with flying colors and energy to spare.
