Unemployment fraud a concern at the start of tax season

Written on Jan 21, 2022

Ohio’s unemployment system is working to raise awareness of potential unemployment fraud this tax season.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says that in December it notified just under one million state residents that applications for unemployment benefits were filed in their name at some point in 2021. This was done in an effort to alert residents that they had potentially been targeted by scammers and give them time to file a fraud claim before a 1099-G tax form is sent to them in the new year.

An online fraud reporting system is also available for those who need to report they’ve personally been victimized and for those who have received unemployment correspondence in other people’s names. Unemployment fraud targets can also file a report by calling 1-833-658-0394.
