PODCAST: Empowering women to fight for recognition in the workplace

Moniqua_SpencerWomen today are still passed over for raises, promotions and recognition in the workplace, and they must spark change by calling attention to their accomplishments, said Moniqua Spencer, U.S. Bank vice president.

“We’re conditioned to think that bragging isn’t ladylike,” Spencer said. “But just saying what we’ve done, we should be proud of that and it’s not bragging. It’s just saying, ‘I’m proud that I’ve had these accomplishments.’”

During OSCPA’s Women, Wealth and Wellness conference in June, Spencer shared her story of fighting to earn a promotion to vice president.

After returning to work from maternity leave, she discovered her male counterpart had been promoted to vice president even though she had been in line for the position. She asked the head of the department how the decision was made. “And he made the comment to me, ‘Well, first we looked at who was here.’ And then I could tell that he was thinking, ‘Oh, that wasn't a good statement to make.’ Because I was just on maternity leave. I was still with the company.”

Spencer collected her accomplishments in a folder throughout the year. At her annual review, she shared that with her supervisor. He said, “Moniqua, I know we talked about these different things and that you've done them, but I guess I didn't realize it all was this year.”

After that, he told her she was being promoted to vice president and the list of accomplishments she provided was what he used to prove she deserved the promotion.

Spencer said women need to empower each other and share these stories so they know they are not alone. She said it’s also important for men to be part of the conversation as well, so they can be aware of the problems and advocate for the women they work with.

“The fact that it's 2019,” she said, “and the things we're discussing, we could talk to our mothers and our grandmothers about and they'll tell us they experienced the same things — that’s a problem.”
