Cleveland high school students will learn more about careers in accounting and business at upcoming summer program

(CLEVELAND – JUNE 25, 2018) – The inaugural Careers in Professional Accounting Camp (CPA Camp) will begin July 22 at Cleveland State University’s Monte Ahuja College of Business. Students from the greater Cleveland area are expected to attend, along with chaperones from local businesses and accounting firms.

“We are excited for this new program to kick off in Cleveland,” said Jasmine Abukar, M.A., manager of diversity and inclusion at The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA), which sponsors several programs designed to increase the number of underrepresented students entering the accounting profession.

Thanks to support from The Ohio CPA Foundation, OSCPA and corporate sponsors, CPA Camp is free for students to attend. Top Leader Sponsors CliftonLarsonAllen, Meaden & Moore and PwC LLP help make this possible; lodging at Cleveland State University, meals, materials and program content are provided at no cost to the students.

“CPA Camp is an exciting opportunity for underrepresented high schoolers in the Cleveland area,” Abukar said. “Through the tours and workshops, they will gain a better understanding of business and leadership they can then build on through the rest of their years in high school and later, hopefully, as accounting and business majors. We consider our attendees the profession’s future leaders.”

In addition to tours and workshops in which the students will learn more about business and hear from local leaders, they also will be able to explore Cleveland State’s campus and interact with students from the Greater Cleveland area with similar goals and interests.

“This experience is invaluable for the students who attend,” Abukar said. “For some of these students, they will be the first in their family to attend college. This might be their first time on a college campus, so we want them to ask questions and dig into everything the campus has to offer.”
