When it comes to studying, everyone has different methods to help them succeed. Mikayla Hutchings, CPA, took a study approach that helped her achieve scores in the 90s, and then published a book about it.

In a recent episode of The State of Business, Hutchings discusses the key takeaways from her book, her process for writing it and how she self-published through Amazon.

One big takeaway Hutchings emphasizes is the level of dedication it takes to pass the CPA exam. She suggests writing study times into your calendar to hold yourself accountable.

“I think a really big takeaway is commitment and having the mindset to be committed to the CPA exam,” she said.

Hutchings acknowledges that the CPA exam can be stressful and intimidating, but her book is to help people through the process.

“It’s completely normal to feel discouraged at times, I did,” she said. “But you have to think of your end goal.”

Hutchings, who never saw herself as a writer beforehand, says her process was simply to help people. She began by putting all the study techniques as well as her thoughts going into the exam into a Google document. She then split her book into sections. These sections are exam structure, schedule, review process, exam day and important mindsets.

“Once I wrote everything down it was really easy all through Amazon,” Hutchings said.

Hutchings says she was able to upload everything right to Amazon using Kindle Create, a formatting tool that helps authors publish through Amazon.

“I self-published the book just because I thought it would be easier,” she said. “This was mostly a hobby in my eyes, and I wanted to get it on the market as fast as I could.”

A lot of people don’t know what to expect from the CPA exam, says Hutchings. Therefore, her goal is to assist others in preparing and passing. To do so, she reached out to her professors at her alma mater, John Carroll University so more students could discover and utilize it. Next, she plans on reaching out to other universities to continue marketing her book as a resource to students.

“I think my book really outlines what to expect from the CPA exam, what’s tested on the four exams and how to utilize your study providers to the best of your ability.”
