OSCPA staff report

The Ohio Society of CPAs is featured prominently in a recent white paper that says associations can help remake education.

The white paper is titled “The Association Role in the New Education Paradigm,” and the authors are Spark Consulting’s Elizabeth Weaver Engel, CAE, and Alcorn Associates’ Shelly Alcorn, CAE.

In a case study on how state CPA societies are innovating for the future, OSCPA President and CEO Scott Wiley, CAE, touts the importance of developing “soft skills” in the workforce.

“While (accounting) graduates are technically skilled and competent, there are gaps in ‘soft skills,’ like client communications, professional judgment, the ability to distill financial information into actionable items, etc.,” Wiley said.

As a result, OSCPA is developing more soft-skills training and focusing on CPAs’ sphere of influence, including allied finance professionals.

In the white paper, the authors argue that how people work and learn will soon look radically different. They predict that as new professions emerge, associations will continue to form. They can become more important to those they serve by applying pressure to create needed change and by assuming a leadership role in workforce training.

To that end, OSCPA has teamed with two nationally known entities in the accounting profession in a groundbreaking study to uncover the links between the relative success of CPA firms and their approach to professional development.

The effort, already under way and in the preliminary reporting stages, is being conducted along with CPA Trendlines Research and Michael Ramos + Associates. Professional tax and accounting practitioners are invited to join the survey at: https://www.research.net/r/CPE16.

Participants will receive an executive summary of the results that users may find valuable for themselves and their firms. You can learn more at ohiocpa.com/learning-trends-survey.
