Is COVID-19 a black swan or grey rhino?

The COVID-19 has resulted in unforeseeable business damage across the nation and the globe. 


“One could categorize COVID-19 as a global business tsunami that is destroying companies,” writes Don Owens, founder and principal at PFRM Solutions in the May/June issue of CPA Voice. “The threat of a pandemic has always been present, but the likelihood of it occurring was considered very low.” 

Owens writes that as with most threats that are viewed as unlikely, many companies had no plan in place to address an event of this magnitude. So, is COVID-19 a “black swan” event that is extremely rare and can’t be planned for or is it a “gray rhino” event that is rare but predictable and can be planned for?
