OSCPA statement on this week’s events in Washington, D.C.

Jan. 8, 2021 – The Ohio Society of CPAs condemns the violent and unlawful actions this week by protestors in Washington, D.C. and commends those members of Congress who performed their Constitutional duty by certifying the presidential election.

“We support the freedom of citizens to protest,” said OSCPA President & CEO Scott Wiley, CAE. “However, what we saw in our nation’s capital this week was instead violence, destruction and lawlessness that has no place in our society.

“As the association representing our state’s most trusted business advisers, our mission is to advance the accounting profession and build stronger communities across Ohio,” Wiley said. “We care about the economy, we care about the stability of this country, and most of all we care for our country’s people. Now that Congress has certified the election, the important work of governing – and healing – must begin.”

OSCPA has a unique role to play during this time, Wiley said.

“Associations bring people together in support of a common purpose,” he said. “Of course, people have different backgrounds and experiences, and naturally they have different opinions. Part of our mission is to help those people have a civil, productive and – dare we say – friendly relationship that we hope can help them understand and respect other perspectives.”
