Muni tax registration deadline approaches for 2020; new registration generator tool available

The deadline is quickly approaching to register with the Ohio Department of Taxation  to administer businesses’ municipal net profit tax filings and payments for the 2020 tax year.

There is a new electronic “Registration Generator Tool” this year that will make it easier for tax preparers and taxpayers to register. To access the new tool, visit the Municipal Net Profit Tax page on The Ohio Department of Taxation’s website, scroll down to “Registration” and select “Registration Generator Tool.” This will download an Excel document you can easily fill out and submit.

This tool is an electronic registration alternative to the paper form, which is still available through the additional links under “Registration” on the same page.  The Excel document is also an alternative way to register without needing to register through the Ohio Business Gateway.

Taxpayers must register, then make an election to file with ODT on or before the first day of the third month of their taxable year. For example, Ohio businesses that have a taxable year that begins on Jan. 1 (taxpayers who operate on a calendar year basis) and want to file and pay their 2020 municipal net profit tax with the Ohio Department of Taxation, must register on or before March 2 (because March 1 falls on a Sunday).

For more information, visit tax.ohio.gov or call 844.238.0403.  If you are having any issues with the registration process, please contact Greg Saul, OSCPA’s Director of Tax Policy.
