Barbara Benton, CAE, The Ohio Society of CPAs’ vice president of government relations, on Aug. 11 was honored as the recipient of The American Society of Association Executives’ Professional Performance Award.

Since 1987 Benton has led The Ohio Society’s government relations efforts and encouraged legislation that helps the business environment while promoting and protecting the accounting profession.

In the awards presentation, which kicked off ASAE’s Annual Meeting & Exposition in Columbus, Benton thanked OSCPA CEO & President and immediate past ASAE chair Scott Wiley, CAE; and past OSCPA President & CEO Clarke Price. Benton said Price, with whom she worked for more than 25 years, first got her involved with ASAE.

“Clarke taught me so much about leadership and association management,” she said. “His confidence in me – a woman lobbyist in what was then very much a good-ol’-boys club – enabled me to grow professionally and bring new approaches to The Ohio Society.”

Benton told the crowd that Wiley “is such a dynamic leader, as many of you know, and his incredible support allowed me to continue to grow as an association executive.”

She also thanked her family and professional teammates, many of whom attended the event.

Benton is the 45th recipient of ASAE’s Professional Performance Award, which recognizes invaluable contributions made by association executives who are at the top level in their organizations but are not CEOs.

She told the attendees that involvement with American Society of Association Executives has also been a key to advancing her career.

“We each will follow our own paths, and ASAE gives us a great platform to succeed.”

Barb: You so deserved this award. Without you, the OSCPA could not have built and maintained our strong governmental and regulatory presence. Jim
